Crude arrows are simple projectiles for use with a bow (either improvised greenwood, properly crafted Anishinaabe, or professional compound), made out of pieces of salvaged junk. Each crude piercing arrow is fashioned with a narrow, pointy head made with penetration in mind, while a crude broadhead arrow is fitted with cutting head to maximize the damage caused to the target.

In the game total damage potential is slightly better for broadhead arrows than piercing arrows. All kinds of arrows can cause severe bleeding wounds and minor bruising.

Crude arrows degrade by 35% each time they are fired. Crude arrows with 36% or better condition can generally be recovered and fired again before they break apart. Arrows are significantly lighter than heavy stones and deal significant damage at longer ranges.

In desperate situations arrows themselves can be used as a stabbing melee weapons, but they will often break when used this way. The damage potential is roughly the same as when fired from a bow. As with all melee weapons, this attack is much deadlier in the hands of a combatant who is Strong and/or skilled with melee weapons.

Tips:

  • If you can manage to recover a low-condition crude arrow, they can also be disassembled into their component parts and recombined (note each crafting disassembly and/or reassembly consumes one full move). Only the shaft and point degrade with each use, which means you reuse the scraps of paper or scraps of foil and string for new arrows.
  • Scraps of paper to craft the arrows can be infinitely spawned by inspecting the unupgraded lighting of ventilation in Gyges.
  • Crude piercing arrows found or scavenged can always be disassembled into three recipe papers, a medium branch, some small parts and some string. Scavenged crude broadhead arrows substitute a glass shard for the small parts.
  • The Crude and Modern broadhead arrows don't penetrate armour any less than the piercing arrows with a greenwood or Anishinabee Bow, but using a compound bow the modern and crude piercing arrows penetrate one layer more than the broadhead arrows do.
  • Crude arrows can be efficiently produced in relative safety in the DMC sprawl where enemies seem to rarely travel. At the cost of safety the player can also set up shop in one of the lighted urban hexes found throughout the map. These areas have their own lighting allowing the full use of each nighttime hour, a time which might otherwise be wasted. The components are easily obtainable midgame and once stockpiled its possible to produce 5 arrows per turn. To clarify, arrows can be produced anywhere with or without lighting, but the player will not be able to produce as many in the darkness.
  • Crude arrows are only as good as the worst materials used to make them, Example: If you use a 48% condition glass shard as the tip and a 63% stick, your crafted arrow will have a condition of 48%.
